pumpkin artist statement

My intentions for this art work was to really show the pumpkin through shadows and highlights and not just the outlines. I did this by using the blackest blacks and the whitest whites. The most surprising part of this art work was how hard it was to work w charcoal but at the same time it was very forgiving. The most difficult challenge I had to face was when to know to stop adding to my art work. I met this challenge at the end when I wanted to keep adding shadows but then realized I messed it up by adding more. One way I experienced right brain thinking was when I was trying to create the shadow from the little pumpkin stem. One place my drawling really works is the shadow from the stem of the pumpkin. Something I learned from this drawling is that I shouldn't be afraid of the darkest blacks because thats what brings it to life. Another artist in the class I can learn from is Syd Walsh. She is very good at making things come to life with her highlights and shadows. if I had a do over I would draw the pumpkins with a reflection. The best part of my art is the shadows on the pumpkin.

I chose this artist because I loved the blending of colors and the messiness but you can still make out what the picture is. I always chose him because he changed the art world from everyone drawling abstract shapes to people drawling actual things.
